CANMEE Lesson Study Collaborative: Student Agency as a Way to Equity
What’s new? A math professional learning series for facilitators of and teachers working in lesson study professional development teams to activate student agency.
How and why is this useful? The team organized facilitated learning activities for teachers to use student-centered learning routines and for County Office staff to facilitate teachers’ lesson study activities. The team uses a document with multiple ways of thinking about student agency to help lesson study groups identify and focus on one or two aspects of student agency to work on together.
What was a unique aspect of this project development? Each teacher interviewed 3-5 students to help them develop empathy and understanding for their students. Teachers felt that these interviews helped them to develop deeper relationships with their students and understand the challenges students were facing in math class online during the COVID-19 pandemic. The team’s work is also featured on the “Why Agency?” episode of CANMEE’s podcast, Making Mathematics Equity Concrete.
